The Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect in highly math-anxious individuals: An ERP study

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect was examined in highly (HMA) and low math-anxious (LMA) individuals performing a number comparison an ERP study. SNARC consists faster latencies when the response side is congruent with location mental line (MNL). Despite stronger HMA group, their responses incongruent trials were slower than only for largest numerical magnitudes. Moreover, HMAs showed less positive centroparietal P3b component ones, but Since arises during selection positivity decreases difficulty decision, this result suggests that might find it more difficult LMAs to control conflict between automatically activated numbers MNL side, especially cognitively demanding trials.

It does exist! A left-to-right spatial-numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect among native Hebrew speakers.

Several studies, starting with Dehaene, Bossini, and Giraux (1993), have reported that, in parity-judgment tasks, the difference in response latencies generated by the right and left hand are negatively correlated with number magnitudes. This SNARC (spatial-numerical association of response codes) effect is in line with the notion that the "mental number line" extends from left to right. The SN...

Simple arithmetic: not so simple for highly math anxious individuals

Fluency with simple arithmetic, typically achieved in early elementary school, is thought to be one of the building blocks of mathematical competence. Behavioral studies with adults indicate that math anxiety (feelings of tension or apprehension about math) is associated with poor performance on cognitively demanding math problems. However, it remains unclear whether there are fundamental diffe...

Anxious Individuals Are Impulsive Decision-Makers in the Delay Discounting Task: An ERP Study

Impulsivity, which is linked to a wide range of psychiatric disorders, is often characterized by a preference for immediate but smaller rewards over delayed but larger rewards. However, debate exists on the relationship between anxiety and impulsivity. Here we use event-related potential (ERP) components as biomarkers in the temporal discounting task to examine the effect of anxiety on inter-te...

Regulation of negative emotions in high trait anxious individuals: an ERP study

Literature has shown that failures in the ability to down-regulate negative emotions are the core substrate of anxiety disorders. Previous studies have investigated this issue by encouraging individuals to voluntarily change how they think about a situation in order to decrease its emotional impact. The majority of studies has demonstrated that explicit instructions to reduce negative affect in...
